Part of the Dead Voices On Air 20th anniversary series of collaborations. A custom font was created for this series. Because of the strong painterly images created by Paul Bilger the titles and band logo are knocked out of a high gloss finish.
The images are not digital paintings. Here’s a little about the process: to begin, I would listen to Mark’s music and take a walk in natural areas with the right balance of optical features. These would usually be forest settings, and I would move the camera, often in ways inspired by the sound, to create the requisite streaking effects. The images usually begin as negatives of digital photographs with long exposure times. This makes the traces of light similar to a kind of dark ink, and the dark areas become light spaces. I would then apply global color adjustments to match the mood which I felt was at work in the images as inspired by the music. Besides cropping, I would constrain myself from any other editing technique. I would either use the result as it was, or, using the base images as materials, I would layer the images with a digital editor to discover unexpected conjunctions which would work with Mark’s music. – Paul Bilger
