A recurring theme on Hammer of the Gods is disorientation, but not the “foggy” type. More like a jarring reconfiguration of reality in the face of something specific changing.
To that end, the art needed to be precise, but not obvious. I wanted to use straightforward images that were off-kilter and surprising for it. Like lying on the floor and staring at the top corner of a room like it’s the horizon.
The cover photo, interior photos, and color blocking were good manifestations of that feeling. The cover image in particular needed a lot of work. Not terribly high-res, and we meant to put in over an entire gatefold LP cover. David did a hell of a job smoothing it out and making it read great. As always, he was also essential when it came to editing the images and finding the exact right places to put things. – Tim Midyett
